Francis Turley has become the fourth Celtic player to seal a loan switch to Ayr United this term. The midfielder has completed a move to Somerset Park as part of the Co-operation Agreement, which enables emerging talents to gain exposure at a far higher standard than the Lowland League.
It is a pathway aimed at fast-tracking progress, and Turley’s statistics this season indicate he is well prepared for the next challenge. He has netted four times and registered five assists in 20 outings during the current Lowland League campaign.Ayr manager Scott Brown has now recruited four midfielders from Celtic — a role he understands inside out from his own days on the pitch. Brown has been eager to strengthen the centre of the park with youthful players capable of coping with the physical and tactical rigours of senior competition, and Turley matches that description.
Turley joins Jude Bonner and Kyle Ure in making the switch to Ayr United earlier in the campaign. Ure has since gone back to Celtic after sustaining a significant hamstring injury, while Bonner continues to feature for Ayr as they press ahead with their season.
The Honest Men also secured another Celtic midfielder in January, with Ben Summers arriving on an initial loan agreement. That transfer is expected to be made permanent in the summer once the 21-year-old’s contract at Celtic runsout.
The transfer provides Turley with the platform to challenge himself at a tougher level, while Celtic will be hopeful that consistent game time in senior football supports his ongoing growth away from Lennoxtown.
