Scottish football has been thrown back into VAR chaos and this time, audio is at the centre of it.
The SFA has confirmed that “provocative” comments were made to Auston Trusty moments before his red card in Celtic’s fiery 2-1 defeat to Hibernian at Parkhead.
But despite acknowledging the verbal exchange, the governing body has stood by the dismissal.
What Happened?
With tensions already high late in the second half, Trusty became involved in a heated confrontation with Hibs’ Josh McGrath.
Seconds later, the Celtic defender reacted with a shove. The referee consulted with his assistant — red card shown.
Parkhead erupted.
What Did The SFA Say?
After reviewing pitch-side audio, the SFA accepted that McGrath’s words were “provocative”.
However, they made it clear that retaliation crosses the line.
“While verbal exchanges are part of the game, players must maintain conduct. Physical retaliation remains a red card offense, regardless of the provocation.”In short: whatever was said, the reaction cost Trusty.
Why Fans Are Furious
Celtic supporters have questioned why only one side of the incident carries consequences.
The lack of transparency over the exact wording has only added fuel to the fire, with many arguing that context matters.
Instead, the Hoops lose a key defender — and potentially momentum in the title race.
The Bigger Picture
Technically, the decision follows the rulebook. But the debate now centres on fairness.
Should provocation carry equal scrutiny? Or is physical contact the only thing that counts?
One thing is certain — this controversy isn’t disappearing anytime soon.
