Roy Keane “Bl0wn Away” as Joao Gomes Masterclass Stuns Villa

Posted on February 28, 2026 by Mrsport

In a moment that has quickly gone viral across social media, the famously hard-to-please Roy Keane couldn’t hide his admiration for Joao Gomes following his heroic display in Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on February 27, 2026.

Gomes was the heart of a revitalized Wolves side, breaking the deadlock in the 61st minute with a world-class strike that clipped the underside of the bar—his first goal of the season. His performance wasn’t just about the goal; he dominated the midfield against a top-four Villa side, recording vital tackles and setting up the second goal for Rodrigo Gomes deep in stoppage time.”I’m watching this kid and I’m seeing a proper, old-school midfielder,” Keane remarked on Sky Sports. “I’m completely blown away. People talk about the ‘modern game’ being soft, but Gomes had presence today. He wanted the ball, he wanted to tackle, and he showed more character than players with ten times his experience. It’s the best individual midfield performance I’ve seen in a long while.”

The win was historic for Wolves, moving them past Derby County’s record-low points tally and breathing fresh life into their survival hopes. For Keane, who rarely hands out “world-class” labels, Gomes’ unmatched energy and technical quality made him “easily one of the best on the pitch” this season.
