The clash between Leeds United and Sunderland on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, has sparked major debate following a disallowed Joe Rodon goal and a swift official statement that has divided opinion.

In the 64th minute of a tense 0–1 defeat for Leeds, Rodon looked to have put his side ahead, powering a header into the net from an Anton Stach free-kick. Elland Road erupted, but the celebrations were cut short when VAR stepped in, ruling the defender offside.

A new camera angle shared after the match quickly gained attention online, suggesting the decision was extremely tight. The footage appears to show Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien possibly playing Rodon onside, prompting strong reactions from home supporters.

Shortly after the final whistle, the Premier League released a statement through Professional Game Match Officials Limited, defending the VAR process. Officials confirmed that semi-automated technology determined Rodon’s shoulder was marginally ahead at the moment the ball was played, and stated that the decision was correct under the laws of the game.

Reactions have continued across social platforms. Many Leeds fans questioned whether the correct reference point was used for the offside lines, while others argued that the technology provides a definitive outcome.

The debate has dominated headlines as Leeds remain locked in a relegation battle, while Sunderland move closer to securing their top-flight status.
