Celtic FC agree exit for in-form star just 24 hours after shock 2-0 Dundee United defeat

Maik Nawrocki, the Polish defender who has rarely put a foot wrong at Celtic, is set to make a permanent switch to Hannover 96, with a £2m deal agreed between the clubs.

The news comes just 24 hours after Celtic suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat to Dundee United, a result that left fans stunned and questioning the squad depth and strategy under Martin O’Neill.

Nawrocki was initially sent on loan last summer while Cameron Carter-Vickers recovered from surgery. Despite concerns over defensive fitness, the Hoops allowed the talented defender to gain first-team experience in Germany — and it appears to have paid off handsomely.

After a slow start at Hannover, Nawrocki has established himself as a key figure in the back three. He recently scored the only goal in Hannover’s Friday night win, marking goals in back-to-back matches and proving he can contribute at both ends of the pitch.

His performances have played a crucial role in Hannover’s push for promotion, with the club sitting just three points off the top spot in the competitive 2. Bundesliga.

While the £2m deal has been agreed, Hannover managing director Jörg Schmadtke stressed that the permanent move depends on their league status next season:

“It depends on which league we’re in. [A final decision will be] relatively late.”

It is widely expected that the deal will go through only if Hannover secure promotion, as the fee would be a substantial investment for a club remaining in the second tier. For Celtic, however, the move is pragmatic: they can recoup a solid fee while also opening space to reinforce other areas of the squad.

From Nawrocki’s perspective, the move offers stability and the chance to play a central role in a team chasing promotion. After impressing consistently in his loan spell, he has clearly earned the trust of Hannover’s management and fans. The Polish defender will likely relish the opportunity to establish himself in Germany’s top flight if Hannover secure their promotion bid.

For Celtic supporters, the timing of the announcement is striking — just 24 hours after a humiliating defeat to Dundee United, which left the Hoops trailing league leaders Hearts by five points. Losing a dependable player like Nawrocki during such a critical moment in the title race adds another layer of frustration.

However, the decision reflects Celtic’s long-term planning. While the current campaign has been turbulent — with injuries, inconsistent form, and questions over recruitment — the club is already making moves to prepare for next season.

Selling Nawrocki now allows Celtic to reinvest in areas where reinforcements are most needed while giving the defender a chance to continue his upward trajectory in a team where he is thriving.

The £2m departure of a player who “rarely put a foot wrong” underscores how the club is balancing immediate disappointment with strategic decisions for the future. As the title race intensifies, fans will be watching closely to see if Celtic can continue to compete while managing a squad in flux — and whether the loss of Nawrocki will have a tangible impact in the coming months.
