Bitter Ally McCoist calls for handball rule change after ‘extremely harsh’ Celtic penalty vs Rangers

Posted on March 3, 2026March 4, 2026 by Mrsport

Ally McCoist has had a strange little rant after admitting he was inside Ibrox to watch Rangers’ draw with Celtic in the Glasgow Derby.

Celtic fought back from 2-0 down to earn a draw after Rangers outplayed Martin O’Neill’s side in the first half to go in at the break with a deserved lead.

However, after Kieran Tierney pulled a goal back and Reo Hatate equalised with a late Celtic penalty, McCoist appeared upset with his strange take in the VAR handball call.McCoist told talkSPORT, “Well there was the penalty at the end? But I’m not sure what Sterling is meant to do, you know? I’ve got no idea.

“People saying it prevented it from going into the goal. I’m not sure it did. I think the goalkeeper’s there as well.

Ally McCoist’s tears over Celtic’s penalty are brilliant.
What is he talking about??

“But there is no argument it hits his hand, but an unbelievable amount of sympathy for him, because effectively, he’s been given a penalty against him for somebody heading the ball off his hand.”McCoist has ‘no argument’ about Celtic penalty but wants law change
McCoist clearly watched the handball with his blue-tinted spectacles on, and he proved it as he now calls for a law change as he says he wasn’t sure if Celtic winger Daizen Maeda’s header was goal-bound.

The former Rangers striker continued, “The thing is as well, his hand is in a natural, not unnatural, his hand is in a natural position for the way he is trying to close the player down.

“I thought, you know, I can understand why they gave it. I just thought it was extremely harsh on Sterling because he knew nothing about it.

“I think we’re going to have to, at some point, bring in the word ‘intentional’ use of the hand. We’re going to have to bring that in, because some of the hand balls, the guys just don’t have a clue.

“Even guys having shots with their arms at their side, see some giving a penalty and things like, it’s just, it’s really, really poor.”

Quite the take from McCoist who has form for moaning about Celtic getting awarded penalties after his tears last season when the Hoops were correctly awarded a late spot kick against Dundee.

Celtic are now eight points behind Hearts and two adrift of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a game in hand.

With Aberdeen up next at Pittodrie on Wednesday night, Celtic can leapfrog Rangers into second place and pile more pressure on Ibrox boss Danny Rohl as the title race heats up.
