Celtic skipper Callum McGregor has spoken out about the full-time melee at Ibrox following the 2-2 stalemate with Rangers.The Parkhead outfit fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a point in the derby showdown, with Reo Hatate netting late on from a follow-up after his penalty had been stopped.
At the sound of the final whistle, tensions erupted as members of both teams became embroiled in a confrontation in the centre of the pitch.
Tuur Rommens and Tomas Cvancara were spotted squaring up at close range, while Viljami Sinisalo, Nico Raskin and Julian Araujo were also caught up in the post-match clash.
Celtic boss Martin O’Neill even intervened in an attempt to defuse matters, instructing his players to step away from the crowd of bodies gathered in the middle.
Danny Rohl likewise gestured for his squad to move back in a bid to ease tensions as emotions threatened to overflow after the draw.
For McGregor, the scenes after the match simply highlighted the passion surrounding derby fixtures and the fiercely contested title battle this term.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the Celtic captain said: “Listen, it is high stakes. Everybody knows what is on the line; it’s livelihoods, people who love the club, so there is emotion in the games, and sometimes it can spill over.
“It’s fine, you’ve just got to stay calm and stay disciplined and try and keep everybody calm because it is an emotional title race.
“It’s three teams going for it, four when you bring Motherwell in as well.
“So you’re going to need discipline, you’re going to need everyone. It’s just about staying calm and trying to execute what we know has brought us success in the past.”
