“WE GOT IT RIGHT” – The Football Association Releases Explosive Statement Explaining Why Liverpool F.C.’s ‘Blatantly Offside’ Late Goal Was Allowed to Stand

Posted on February 23, 2026February 23, 2026 by Mrsport

Controversy has erupted across the Premier League after The Football Association released an official statement defending the decision to allow Liverpool’s dramatic late winner to stand — a goal many rival fans are calling “blatantly offside.”

The flashpoint came deep into stoppage time during Liverpool’s tense encounter with Nottingham Forest.

With the score locked and tension boiling, Liverpool bundled the ball into the net in the dying seconds. Forest players immediately threw their arms up. The assistant referee kept his flag down. VAR intervened. The stadium held its breath. And then came the decision: Goal given.

Within minutes, social media exploded. Freeze-frames circulated. Lines were drawn by fans online. Commentators debated. Pundits questioned. The word “scandal” trended.

Now, the FA has broken its silence.

The FA’s Official Explanation

In a strongly worded statement released Monday morning, The Football Association clarified why the goal was deemed legitimate under current laws of the game.

“The VAR check confirmed that the attacking player was in an onside position at the moment the ball was last played by his teammate,” the statement read. “The calibrated offside lines showed no conclusive evidence that any playable body part was ahead of the second-last defender.

”The FA further emphasized that under IFAB offside protocol, decisions must be based on “clear and obvious” evidence to overturn the on-field call.

In this case, because the assistant referee had not flagged for offside, VAR required definitive proof of an infringement — proof they insist did not exist.

But that explanation has done little to calm furious opposition supporters.

“Blatantly Offside” — Or Millimeters?

Replays appear to show a shoulder — possibly even part of the upper arm — edging beyond the defender. Critics argue that common sense should prevail. “If the naked eye says offside, what’s the point of technology?” one pundit fumed on live television.

However, the FA doubled down.“Supporters should understand that marginal decisions are resolved through calibrated technology. The attacking player’s scoring body part was deemed level in line with the defender. As per the laws, level is onside.”

In other words: if it’s tight, it’s legal.

Forest’s Fury Grows

Nottingham Forest officials are reportedly unhappy behind closed doors. Sources suggest the club has requested further clarification on the specific frame used to determine the offside line. Though no formal complaint has been lodged, frustration inside the camp is said to be “significant.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, have remained largely silent — publicly at least. Privately, insiders insist they are baffled by the outrage.

“It was checked. It was cleared. It was a goal,” one source close to the club said.VAR Under the Microscope — Again

This latest controversy adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding VAR’s application in English football. Critics argue that technology was introduced to eliminate controversy, yet it continues to generate it.

The FA addressed this directly in their statement:

“While we acknowledge the emotional nature of such moments, the process was followed precisely in accordance with Premier League and IFAB protocols.”

Translation: the rules were applied correctly, even if the optics are uncomfortable.

A Decision That Could Define a Season?

With Liverpool fighting for crucial league positioning, the late winner could prove pivotal in the final standings. That reality has only intensified scrutiny.Rival fans argue that “fine margins” are deciding major outcomes. Liverpool supporters counter that every team benefits and suffers from tight calls across a 38-game season.

But one thing is certain: the FA’s statement has not ended the debate — it has amplified it.

Whether you see it as technological precision or technical loophole, the goal stands. The points are awarded. The record books will show a legal strike.

Yet for many watching, the question lingers:

If that wasn’t offside… what is?
